Sources and licences

This table renders from the loader's own provenance registry, so it cannot drift from what we actually recorded. Every startup carries a redistributable flag inherited from its sources, and the methodology sets out what we do with each one.

Published on this site

4 of the 14 sources on this page are Indian government open data, republishable with attribution, and they are the only ones a published startup may come from. Every one of the 4,53,192 startups behind the national counts, the map, the district pages and the state pages carries a redistributable flag inherited from these four.

Held internally, never published

These are proprietary directories. We use them for entity resolution, which is how we know two entries are the same company, and we do not republish their content. That means the internationally recognisable accelerator overlay, the part of this dataset that would look most impressive, is exactly the part you will not find on these pages.

A company we know about only through one of these directories is not part of the published dataset. It is not inside the 4,53,192 above, not on the map, not in any ranking and not in any total, and its startup page is served with a noindex directive so it stays out of search results. The two company-registry mirrors are a special case, because the facts under them are public MCA filings: from those we publish the registration status, the registrar, the company class and the capital figures the filing itself states, plus a locality and a coordinate derived from the registered address. We print the registered office as filed with the MCA, trimmed of contact details; it never appears in a report or an export, and a request from the company removes it within two working days. Never a director's name.

Deliberately not used

Crunchbase, Tracxn, PitchBook and LinkedIn. All are proprietary analyst products rather than public records. The value of this dataset is that it is assembled from openly licensed government data we can attribute and republish, and mixing in scraped proprietary data would destroy that permanently rather than gradually.
