In their own words
Trees of Ahmedabad is a crowd-funded, citizen initiative where volunteers come together to map street trees of the city. This mapping tells us about the canopy gaps and where plantation needs to be done strategically. Based on tree density, species diversity and other factors like ecology, pollution, etc the planning can be done scientifically. This project is backed by expert advisors from the landscape, horticulture, urban design and botany fields. Alongside public trees, we are working on creating a heritage tree map which will document notable trees of Ahmedabad all over the city. We have successfully completed mapping street trees of one square block of the city, in Thaltej municipal zone, covering an area of about half a square kilometer. More than 600 trees have been mapped so far and the GIS map is now accessible for everyone to see online. There is also an advocacy group, wherein a few lawyers have volunteered to work on the laws regarding trees, which are quite outdated for Gujarat. We have filed 4 RTI's and based on the answers are preparing for filing an appeal, which in turn will progress towards a PIL based on our research work. The project has been published in a few local newspapers including Gujarat samachar, Ahmedabad mirror and Divya bhaskar. We have been invited to give talks at companies and universities and also conduct tree walks on invitation.
