In their own words

Brief Note on the Black Soldier Fly Project 1. Background Black Soldier Fly (Scientific name: Hermetia illucens) is an insect species that provides solution to feed industry as an alternative insect protein source. Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae are saprophagous and can grow on any organic waste matter (animal or plant) and the larvae grown are rich in protein (40-44%) and lipids (20-35%)., it has emerged as the cheaper protein alternative source for livestock feed applications like shrimps, fishery, poultry and pets. The compost formed during the insect feeding process is rich in NPK and other micronutrients, thus has commercial value as fertilizer. Additionally, high quality chitin can be derived from defatted BSF exoskeleton, which is also one of the fastest growing biopolymers, which has potential applications in agriculture, pest-control, water treatment, food preservation, textile, and others. Moreover, it does not carry diseases and is non-pest, and actively feeding BSF larvae secrete an chemical that keeps away other species of flies, thereby repelling potential insect pests. BSF larvae can reduce food waste volume by up to 95% over a rapid two week growing cycle, and they’re found throughout the world, so a potentially global solution. The FAO estimates that food production needs to increase by 70% by 2050 to feed the world’s growing population, with a big focus on higher quality protein diets in developing parts of the world. These insects that can be grown on organic waste, and with a resulting tiny carbon footprint, represent a massive opportunity for an animal feed industry that are desperate for new sources of high-quality, sustainable feed alternatives in livestock feed applications. BSF Products: 1) BSF Protein (Primary Product); 2) Lipids (By-product); 3) Compost / Frass (by-product) Global Industries: Some of the leading Insect farming start-ups globally are Protix, Innovafeed; Enviroflight, Ynsect, Entocycle; Enterra feed, Betahatch; Mutatec; FreezeM etc. Star-ups in India: Loopworm; Insectifii; Ecofly; Kovai Protein; Insectika Biotech Private Limited; protyn Leading automation BSF manufacturers globally: Protix in collaboration with Buhler Group Insect Technology Solutions; Entocycle; Insect.systems; Insect engineers, 2. Feed Sources for commercial-scale BSF Protein production:  Organic waste material  Distillers Industrial by-products like Wet Distillers grains (Spent grains); Distillers Dried Grains (DDGs).  Food Industrial by-products like potato waste (Wet Potato Peels), Jam industries waste.  Poultry Manure 3. Present Status: BSF rearing was initiated in the year 2019 and the colony of BSF has been maintained under laboratory conditions since then. For commercial-scale rearing, cost-effective feed sources have been explored from industrial waste / by-products (i.e. spent grains / potato peels) including food waste and organic waste and trails were conducted for suitability as feed for BSF larval production. Analysis of defatted BSF meal has shown protein content upto 60%. Samples of defatted protein meal were provided to Care cure Limited, Bengaluru for feed testing against poultry birds and have shown positive results with a 10% BSF protein supplement in the feed. Growvel Pvt Ltd, a shrimp feed industry has tested BSF protein for shrimp diet and has found BSF protein as suitable protein component in the shrimp diet. 4. Objectives:  To establish a commercial-scale BSF larval production / processing unit utilizing organic feed sources from industries, agricultural and other organic waste.

What we do not know

We have no liveness signal for any company on this site: no filings feed, no revenue, no check that the website still resolves. A startup existing here means a startup exists, not that a business is trading.
