The Odisha First Collagen Company from Fish waste The importance of both aquaculture and fishing to food security is expanding continuously, particularly in light of the rising global fish production and the United Nations’ 2030 program of sustainable development. Odisha has emerged as the fourth largest fish producing state in the country with annual production of 9.91 lakh ton during 2021-22, contributing significantly to the state’s economy. Approximately 70% of fish and other seafood are processed before being sold, resulting in enormous amounts of solid waste from processes such as beheading, de-shelling, degutting, separating fin and scales, and filleting. More than half of the weight of fresh fish becomes by-products of the fish industry. Most of these by-products are buried or burned, causing environmental, health, and economic issues. Minor portions are employed as inexpensive ingredients in animal feeds. Fish waste is a rising problem that requires quick, creative methods and solutions. By keeping the above view, “Gelcotin Biotech Pvt. Ltd.” is a technology company is on the process to set up fish collagen/Collagen production unit in Balasore. This project is under the banner of Waste to Wealth Mission, is an initiative by Prime Minister's Science, Technology & Innovation Advisory Council. Fish waste (Scale, Bone and Skin) act as an excellent source of collagen. This type of collagen is becoming increasingly popular, because it comes from an abundantly available marine source, which means it is bioavailable. Fish collagen peptides are widely used in several food, nutra & cosmetic applications.
