In their own words
Chitrangan is a secular, independent, non-profit venture that serves women and children from under-privileged families and empowers them to realize their potential with dignity and pride. We provide high quality, holistic social services to those living in the slums, trible areas through our free school, nutrition programme and health services, and provide vocational training and employment for women. We are also building the capability of the next generation of social entrepreneurs through our School of Social Enterprise. I have started ‘’Chitrangan’’ Foundation some 8 years back where I brought the artisans, traditional trible artist, weavers under the one roof. I trained them and give them platform to conduct their exhibition and provide market for their products which they make with local artefacts. It was challenging to bring all artist together to have a uniqueness and unity among all, specially in this pandemic situation. Post-Independence, Gandhi’s Nationalist Khadi movement did revive the handloom and textile industry, However, with industrialization and power looms, cheap and convenient cloth became the norm of the working class. This caused the weaver population to diminish significantly, forcing them to change their professions as peanut-sellers, rickshaw-pullers, etc. India’s varied textile and artisan heritage was lost. I have traveled across villages, tribles and towns, meeting artisans, weavers and small-scale entrepreneurs -who produced flatweaves and multi-coloured cloth in handloom. I have procured directly from rural artisans without any middlemen, causing them to have higher profit margins than their competitors. Its relationship with Habitat, emporiums and, friends, retailer as a major customer, contributed to 60-65% of the revenue. Chitrangan revenue and popularity grew exponentially over the years. Demand for its authentic fabrics, artifacts increased, causing supply chain issues. Creating those hand-woven fabrics took time and patience (a quality that customers tend to lack). We realized that increasing sales volume and expanding further would be a humungous task and instead decided to focus on quality control instead of rapid expansion. consolidating weavers, artisans, and craft workers of a particular region. This offered them joint ownership of resources and access to common facilities. It also trained them to develop new handicrafts with quality Life is all about experiences. Experiences that lead us to finding our "reason for being". For all these journey, the Chitrangan "reason for being" has been to bring in the rich and diverse culture that we have in the form of our artisans that the tradition of our country offers to us. Taking it a step further, is what the experience centre is all about. Servicing our consumers had always been the inspiration for all forms of innovation at Chitrangan. Be it the introduction of many designs on different media. Now this all the atrifacts and artisans from all over the India under one roof. Since its inception, the company was successful in creating a unique image and repeat customers by its unique selling proposition of quality fabric, traditional style and consistent quality. In fact, large percentage of the customers buys from Chitrangan, because it has significant contribution in improving the life of rural and trible artisans. Any one can come here to Chitrangan Handicrafts and enjoy a consultation with an artist, artisans , designers and the most beautiful part the kids are having a jolly good time while challenging themselves at a very unique and exclusive play zone. After the Shopping all of you can then come together for wholesome yummy meal at the cafe run by village women. All of these new services have been brought together as a seemless integration of all that you need. Come and celebrate India with Chitrangan. Here we will include the amount of money you are asking for and how that money will be used.
